I *think* I am prepared, but any insight into how you think we ought to be preparing would be helpful! For me, the priority is suggestions for preparedness. If your elaboration on details of the root cause(s) has to wait, so be it.

I want to extend an offer to try to help anyone if they feel they need anything. I don't have much myself, but in times like these, I think communities like ours should come together to help each other.

We shouldn't be surprised about this. The Middle East has been a chess game for decades now. These things rarely end in compromise. They end with one power dominating everyone else: a reassertion of power or a changing of the guard.

MEGA, we have our faults, but do you really want to witness a "changing of the guard?" Personally, I would rather read about such events in the history books than to experience those kind of events in my lifetime. But I fear we are approaching one of those watershed events of history, it's unavoidable.

Paris backs Syria no-fly zone as fighting grows

BEIRUT (AP) — France signaled Thursday that it was prepared to take part in enforcing a partial no-fly zone over Syria, piling pressure on President Bashar Assad's embattled regime as it widens a major offensive against rebels in Damascus and surrounding areas.

Most of these last two months I have spent trying to figure out how to ease you all into this but I have still not yet devised a way.

I hope you have all enjoyed this last summer of our innocence and that you are prepared for what comes next.

It is hard to say what EJ means with this statement. Either way, I wish he hadn't teased us with it and just said his peace. Had trouble sleeping last night. Even had a dream about it. And then I had a funny dream about guiding a little frog along, which was nice.

Most of you are too young to remember the Cuban missile crisis or the effects of the Vietnam war if you were of draft age. We may have difficult times ahead, but it's probably not the end of the world. Be thankful you have found a guide for whatever is to come, so you can be prepared for you family.

I agree. Personally, I'm gearing for a potentially worse variant of the 70s.

Growing up in that time-period, my family bought some land in the country where we could grow food, chickens, a cow or two. We also were big into solar water-heaters, greenhouses and wood-burning stoves. Then the times changed, people adjusted and we moved on.

There is no doubt some hard times are ahead -- very hard potentially for those who aren't (or can't) prepare. Doubtless that will lead to social unrest.

And a piece of advice, EJ -- just lay it out. It's not like you're speaking to a bunch of wide-eyed optimists here. And who knows, maybe we'll be the ones to convince *you* it won't be that bad.

+1 Yes, good God, I don't understand those who expect premium content for nothing. It's ridiculous. And it's not as if EJ gets great amounts of personal benefit from the free side; like ad revenue.

I think the problem is not that he is worried about crushing the fragile flowers here. More that he doesn't want to encourage Mad Max hysteria and a "Gold Bug" atmosphere.

Also, What exactly is EJ predicting? A war in the middle east? Hasn't there been a war in the middle east for like 20 years? 30? Bad economy? unemployment? We already have that.

I know I have! Several exciting travels and adventures. And managing to survive and even thrive in the recent economy is exciting in its own right.

However...living the good life is rather poor preparation for what I expect/fear is coming. Drinking from the fire hose of life doesn't make me want less, it makes me want more. Maybe I should spend some time adjusting my normalcy bias downwards instead of a "one last hurrah" mentality .

I have been waiting for that powder keg to blow for 3 years. Even made a bet with someone and lost. I suspect they will knock Assad out and nothing else will happen in the short term. iran's allies in Lebanon talk a lot but too afraid to attack Israel. And nobody will attack Iran. They would not talk about it publicly if they were going to do it. Most likely Israel will continue to target Iran's computers and hunt down the scientists. In the long run, anything can happen as all these arab spring countries descend into chaos but it is years away so meaningless for now in terms of investment strategy.

I work for an Israeli company -- I inquired about contingency plans and the response coming back was that it's all talk, don't worry about it.

Believe me, I'm considering the context. But for a company with offices (and family) in Israel they certainly do seen rather nonchalant about the whole thing....for a little more added info, my manager told me he's been hearing that an attack on Iran was "imminent" for about a decade.

I'm very interested in why EJ thinks "this time is different".
