OK so we agree on that good.

When I see thousands upon thousands of "undocumented immigrants" (How Orwellian: I suppose that we'll begin referring to the neighborhood drug-dealer as an "unlicensed pharmacist"!) marching through our streets carrying Mexican flags and signs saying "America: You OWE me", I don't think I'm being nearly harsh enough.

You're letting yourself get distracted by small potatoes. Illegal immigration is a problem but its one that is solvable only by a government that wants to solve it. We have to fix our leadership issue first and then our FIRE economy before we can even begin to worry about immigration. Priorities and all that.

If by "bracero" you mean a guest worker program, i'm all for it. BUT, NOT until the border is closed, secured and truly defended - even if we have to place an Army division there, and if necessary, shoot people.

If you eliminate the reason for people to come AND give them viable options the immigration problem will largely solve itself. Work programs (ie. braceros) and going after employers who hire illegals will probably virtually eliminate illegal immigration. Which will also virtually eliminate many of the "coyotes" business too...

Then you legalize pot, which is what provides a huge chunk of the drug cartels cash, well over half of it. Without the cash from pot most of them will have to close up shop and go back across the border. Harder drugs will still be a problem but most of that is actually home grown via quick and dirty meth on the go production methods (aka shake n' bake).

Doing those things will do far more to protect our borders from the cartels and illegals than guns ever could. It'd probably be far cheaper and easier too. edit: It should also be pointed out that its incredibly dangerous for many illegals to make the effort to cross the border already. So its highly debatable wether soldiers shooting border crossers would do anything to deter more illegals. Likely what would happen is for everyone shot several would still come. And never forget we're talking about people here. People who are desperate in most cases and have a family to think of. We should not be so quick to shoot them for moral reasons alone.

As for your last paragraph: we're either talking past each other, or you're confusing cause with effect. "Backlash" was the cause; the F.I.R.E. economy is the effect.

I would say the FIRE economy was established during the so called backlash which just a bunch of nonsense drummed up by the media and gov. at the time.

All politicans are asses or rather assholes. Cheering for one group over another is pointless and is used as a way to distract people from their goals by the media. So long as they have you focused on the red or blue team you won't be thinking about the real issues at hand much or at all.

A British author convicted of insulting Singapore's judiciary has lost his appeal against a six-week jail term.

Alan Shadrake, 76, had sought to overturn a High Court ruling last November that sentenced him to prison and fined him $Sg20,000 ($US16,150) over a book about criminal executions in the city-state.

His book, "Once A Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock", explores the history of capital punishment in Singapore.

"We affirm the sentence imposed by the judge," said Justice Andrew Phang of the three-member Court of Appeal panel, asked by the defence to overturn the conviction.

AFP reports Mr Shadrake joked and laughed with reporters outside the court after the judgement was read.

"I expected the decision. I am very sorry for Singapore. I'm not sorry for myself," he said.

Mr Shadrake, a freelance journalist and author, has been allowed to undergo a medical test before starting his jail term next Wednesday.

The sentence is the stiffest ever imposed in Singapore for the offence and has been denounced by human rights groups campaigning for an end to executions and greater freedom of expression in the country.

The previous longest jail term for contempt of court was 15 days.
