In Iran, a Defector Disappears Again
    [...]
The official said Mr. Amiri was allowed to spend time with his wife and child at home under supervision. On Thursday afternoon, intelligence agents of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps took him away for debriefing for an undetermined amount of time, to answer questions about his contacts with the U.S. government and CIA, the official said.

US wanted to 'swap Iranian scientist for hikers
"An Iranian scientist, who returned home last week charging he had been held by US agents for more than a year, has said that they had pressed him to agree to be exchanged in a "spy" swap for three US hikers in custody in Tehran.

      ...

"They wanted to see if the university was conducting nuclear research. They kept asking irrelevant questions and wanted to link Iran's peaceful nuclear work to that of weaponisation," Amiri said.

He said after his "negative" answers, the US agents put him through a lie detector test.

"A lie detection machine was attached to me when they thought I was dodging their questions," he said.

"In the end they realised that it was worthless intelligence-wise and that their scheme to abduct me had been defeated."

He said that he was shown documents "explaining the process of making nuclear weapons which they wanted me to say I had brought to America."

Amiri said the US agents were angry when they discovered he had established contacts with Iranian agents "by using codes."

"These are issues which I can't talk about as they could hurt national interests," he said without elaborating on how Iranian agents contacted him inside the United States.

Amiri said that he was "handed over" to the Iranian interests section in Washington by US agents."

I really wish they'd get better screen writers for their material. This is not even believable to the American public any longer.

definitely explains why we haven't seen any iranian hit tv shows or movies win any awards...

edit: well i guess my bad movie joke backfired, per wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_of_Iran

Is this the necessary formula for maintaining credibility? If so, at what cost?
I'm sure glad you weren't around when the 135 billion in fake treasury securities showed up in Italy.

I would be VERY skeptical of the US exploiting an intelligence source and then throwing him to the lions in order to effect the recovery of a couple US citizens in such a public manor...it goes against the grain as, if true, it would make future recruitment of intelligence sources far harder.

I don't think I'm buying into this possibility.

So, if the story is contrived, what would be a possible motive for this contrivance?

It is not worth speculating on this. We have almost no verifiable information whatsoever. We have only a jumble of conflicting claims and counter-claims.

C'mon, fight through the cognitive dissonance. It'll be fun. I promise.

Besides, you guys speculate on just about everything else, why not dabble into motive here. It might just be revealing.

Isn't this one of the common tools of propaganda -- get us to waste time fussing over noise instead of focusing on things we can figure out?

Sure, this Iranian case may not be noise if we knew all there was to know about it. But we don't know such and have a snow ball's chance in Hades of knowing such. I would prefer to spend my conspiracy theory analysis time on things I have some chance of understanding.

(So ... why are you urging us to waste time on this nonsense? Who do you work for, anyway ?

ok...ok... I'll leave this one. You're right, it's not a good enough example.

I work for myself, by the way. No allegiances, except to liberty and humanity.

While I find this stuff quite interesting and worthy of the odd speculative punt......I usually think of James Jesus Angleton going batsh!t crazy, and decide to get off the computer and play with my kids ......Angleton's behavior spurred the birth of a word: Angletonian....an adjective used to describe something paranoid, bizarre, or conspiracy related
