California Dreaming: Record $500 Million Tag on L.A. Home

One of the biggest homes in U.S. history is rising on a Los Angeles hilltop, and the developer hopes to sell it for a record $500 million.
Nile Niami, a film producer and speculative residential developer, is pouring concrete in L.A.’s Bel Air neighborhood for a compound with a 74,000-square-foot (6,900-square-meter) main residence and three smaller homes, according to city records. The project, which will take at least 20 more months to complete, will exceed 100,000 square feet, including a 5,000-square-foot master bedroom, a 30-car garage and a “Monaco-style casino,” Niami said.
“The house will have almost every amenity available in the world,” he wrote in an e-mail. “The asking price will be $500 million.”...

i'm trying to imagine a 5,000 sq ft master bedroom. the average american HOME is 2600 sq ft. so how do you decorate a 5,000 sq ft master bedroom? does the house come with a gps system and its own map app for guests?

i'm trying to imagine a 5,000 sq ft master bedroom. the average american HOME is 2600 sq ft. so how do you decorate a 5,000 sq ft master bedroom? does the house come with a gps system and its own map app for guests?

with an indoor jogging/rollerderby rink - or hey, maybe a putting green...

methinks there ought to be a conspicuous consumption tax - kinda like what they foisted - shortlived as it was - onto the boat biz a while back - for this completely OVER THE TOP display of self-aggrandizement

also think there ought to be a 'surtax' on the sales of such - esp in that place i'm oh-so-familiar with - since the 'increase in value' of these 5-10mil &up joints hasnt got a GD thing to do with the interior decorating or remodeling prowess of the owners/builders of em - its ALL about the land and its location - so the public - as in The Rest of US - ought to be 'cut in on the deal' - at least on sales above a certain multiple of the median..

methinks it has something to do with dbase/server choke or latency in the TCP/IP ckts - as it seems to happen only when you get a dialog box that pops up asking if you'd like to 'remain on page' or not(?)

you're right. this just shows my limited imagination. i hadn't considered the idea of putting a tennis court in the master bedroom.

Understandable oversight. Tennis court in the bedroom makes perfect sense in Boston, with its 111 inches of snow each winter, or even Jamie Dimon's NY, but this home is in Southern California. Who would have thought of it?

I don't really like the artificial surface, though. Think there's any way to get some grow lights and a sprinkler system installed so we could have natural grass indoors? Or how about a retractable dome?

Nope. Berlin or New Haven. It didn't matter. The white stuff aimed square at Boston this year...or maybe Braintree...either way, ol' man winter had his sights trained this time.

kinda startin to look like there HAS been a change in the weatha tho (esp considering the uptick in number of tropicals heading NW in the midpac region)

so the right coast might get a break this one - all i know is I'M READY (or will be by dec - x-fingahs - if'n i can get motivated to get up earlier and take my boy out for an early morning romp..)

Personally, I think we should start an internet search for something suitable in Cali to be the new international headquarters for iTulip and VirZOOM. Surely EJ is tired of shovelling snow in Boston after that last two winters?

It beats shoveling up your home when Ms. San Andreas and her friends come for a visit.

That's why God invented Arizona. Phoenix in the winter and Flagstaff in the summer, and we're way more business-friendly than Calif. Come on down, EJ (and dcarrigg, and jk and all you poor Yanks)!

I've spent about half of my last 3 summers in AZ shiny! and while it's too hot, I'd prefer it to the north east in winter. And their summer is nothing anyone will want to pay to vacation in. As for the AZ winter....amazing.

We thought long and hard about Tucson, Shiny! In the end, too much brown 24/7. Had some nice nights at the Tucson Hotel, the Southwest's Overlook. And a great Mex-rest. a short walk away. A near-run thing.

Do you think Adelaide is a fair comparison to Vancouver? Adelaide is stuck in the middle of nowhere, at least Vancouver is on the West coast of Canada. I think Perth would be a better comparison, also on the West coast. If Perth's prices were 50% higher than Sydney's that would also be completely illogical. But, to me at least, a better comparison to Vancouver than Adelaide.
