According to Wikipedia, 60 Dutch guilders (the approximate value at the time of the trade goods) at the time would be worth about a thousand US dollars today. According to answers.com, several thousand US dollars. There was no such thing as a United States dollar back in 1626 of course, which complicates the determination of value in our currency. From another source I gathered that 60 Dutch guilders were worth about 24 contemporary Spanish dollars in the New World.Originally posted by FRED View PostAlan Grayson on the Worst Deal Since Manhattan Was Sold for $24 in Trinkets
At any rate the native american tribe that took payment for the island was not the tribe that actually lived and operated on the island. It is unclear if either tribe understood the European concept of buying, selling, and owning land as this idea was generally not present in indigenous American cultures.
To me, it is the one-group-sells-what-belongs-to-another-group aspect that seems paralleled today. Our compromised politicians and unelected Federal Reserve are giving away our tax money without our permission or, for most people, even our knowledge.

I think an appropriate question would have been:
where can I get $250,000 of insurance, for $7,000, on a house that has already burned down?
If we are going to renegotiate home mortgages, we should renegotiate TARP1.
