I voted Libertarian almost exclusively from 1980 until fairly recently, until I finally had to face the fact that they were a party of crackpots. I agree with Libertarian principles, but the individuals in the party are soooo out of touch with most voters; sooooo not ready for prime time. As a party they've had 40 years to get their act together but have failed to gain any meaningful traction. And they're probably the largest and most established of the 3rd parties.

LOL, preaching to the choir. Every time I wanted to get behind them the candidate would have legalizing pot in their top 3 issues. I'm not against it, but it's not a top 3 important issue for the country...even worse, it's not a top 3 best Libertarian issue. Gives new meaning to your use of the term crack"pot". Maybe with marijuana gaining critical mass of legalization it will fall-off of the standard Libertarian platform and the party will be more successful in spite of itself.

The way to overcome the spending issue is to use the parties in spite of themselves; like Ron Paul as Libertarian uses the Republican cloak, Bernie as Independent/(Socialist?) uses the Democrat cloak, and actually as Trump as, well, Trump used the Republican moniker.

Lastly, your quasi, and potentially unintended, reference to lead as a precious metal gave me a real belly laugh. So true.

As an aside, even if it becomes a movement that I'll support, it wouldn't be this election cycle because my vote needs to matter in this important election. I would consider supporting it heading toward 2024 and the interim mid-terms. As a self-assessed openminded, rational moderate I was shocked by the treatment afforded Tulsi Gabbard during the Democratic primaries. I guess her independence was too detrimental to FIRE, billionaires, military/industrial or whoever it is that keeps running and electing these corrupt souls. EJ has previously initiated input regarding a third party alternative. Maybe this is a start. Sorry to you international iTuliper's, it's US-centric for now.

Great find rjwjr. I can easily agree with you that our current two party system has gotten us to a bad place and changes are welcome.
A related idea is ranked-choice voting which tends to give a boost to third party candidates.

I, too, was disgusted by the Democrats' treatment of Gabbard, with the wholesale co-operation of the MSM. The Unity Party sounds interesting. Personally I'd vote for Gabbard/Crenshaw, but they haven't even come out and said they would run on that ticket. But I'm afraid the Republocrats have a stranglehold on the electoral process. Not just in the nuts and bolts of the electoral process, but more importantly in people's minds.

Every election is now considered so life-or-death important that voters who would like to vote 3rd party continue to hold their noses and vote for their pick of the lesser of two evils. It'll probably be the same in 2024, if we still even have a republic and elections by then. The way the system is set up, the Unitarian candidates wouldn't even be allowed in the 2024 debates. They'd have to have a HUGE amount of money for a massive media onslaught in order to break through the barriers erected against them. Good luck with that. We already saw how the MSM closed ranks against Gabbard this time around. If the Unity Party were to pull off a miracle and actually become a threat to the status quo, then we can expect players like Facebook, Youtube and Twitter to also close ranks against them in 2024.

I'm a father of teenage boys and I've worked armed individually and as part of a pair in semi-permissive public areas where kidnappings, bombings, but particularly mob violence often quickly emerged.

I was always, always, always mindful of my location and where I would immediately move in the event I had to defend myself with a weapon due to the mob violence risk.

The thought of discharging my weapon was absolutely nothing compared to the thought of successfully exiting an urban mob.

Based on my personal experience, and as a parent, I would never encourage or support arming my minor child and transporting them to a semi-permissive area with a reasonably high threat level to help anyone.

There are well trained and well experienced ex-military mature civilians who have observed what is happening with the ANTIFA riots and been caught out quite badly just observing.

I have no idea how this will turn out, but I do know that if the mother of this child hasn't done anything illegal, she has certainly written a new book on irresponsible parental behaviour.

That kid and his mom did some pretty dumb things and it remains to be seen how much of it was illegal.

Really dumb and really lucky is an incredibly dangerous combination.

Nice to hear from you again rjwjr, been a while. You may be right.

The killer might successfully evade justice with some kind of self-defense argument, funny things do indeed happen in court rooms. I would hope not. The killer left his own town and drove over for the purpose of becoming involved in the protests. He had full knowledge of the tensions he chose to participate in.

What's next? Can I go to the OSU/Michigan game with a loaded .45, quietly mutter some insults to a riled-up losing fan hoping he'll punch me in the nose? Can I stand my ground and blow his head off? Sucks to be you, let's get this blood off our jackets and go get pizza. One less Michigan fan. I knew one of those idiots would take the bait.

That seems like a bad way to run a society because it will almost certainly result in escalating violence and bloodshed.

You have chosen to make your point by attempting to appeal to my emotions. It will work better if you attempt to appeal to my intellect...which your written argument certainly does not. Your analogy is a real stretch. Your framing of the story begins with the accused whereas it should begin with the rioters. If they aren't rioting then none of the rest is necessary or occurs.

Most ironically, however, is your blind spot to your own form of racism. You believe by including nice-looking pictures of the two deceased that I'll judge them based on their looks. I don't. I judge them based on their actions. They have a history of arrest, they were destroying private property, they were the aggressors toward the accused. Period. I don't care how nice they smile, their gender, their color, or anything other than their actions...which I denounce.
