In REAL dollars appliances have probably gotten cheaper. Similar technology to that 70s dryer can be had for $275. Quality if debatable however.

There is no debate on quality. When I was in high school I was an appliance repairman, often confused with the paperboy. Today's appliance are mostly shit. Believe me.

I agree that old is good and is built to last. However I do think todays equipment, if you think of dryers using technology as in freezers and refrigerators to save energy, and also of course electronic controls for moisture, and fully automatic electronically controlled programs, high rpm, washing machines, that things at least up to now was going in the direction of offering more for less. My own washing machine is made in Germany. It's of good quality I think, but I agree not all is good these days. Those state of the Art dryers using a condenser unit with heat pipes as a fridge to save energy (made in Germany) costs around 1200 dollars here, and a cheap one, with just timer goes for around 344 dollars on sale.

When thinking of what other things have risen since since 1973, price of gold, etc, it's not really that out of whack, with a 4-5 times increase in price since 1973 for a high quality model made in west Europe, vs the US price back then.

I live in the south of France now and people here think you are crazy for wanting a dryer. The local apliance store didn't even sell them. It is pouring rain out and they hang their clothes in the bathroom. I have gotten used to the smell of midew in peoples houses. I decided I couldn't fight the system, so I bought a dehumidifier. Much to my surprise, it works great!
