I read that an estimated 50% of people in the UK had already been infected. What do you think about this?

Read the wikipedia page on herd immunity. Long story short the higher the R₀ the more infections you need to develop herd immunity. What Niel Ferguson is now saying is that the R value is now a lot higher than he had assumed. Roughly in the range of 3 to 4 . So in this table that would correspond to 70%-75% of the population having the disease:

I heard "around 2/3rds of the population" quoted, eg 66% but 70% if you like.
