Thanks for the links, very interesting.

It's crazy to think how much money is spent on worthless advertising.

It's broken below the $50B market cap I was thinking might be a decent valuation when this thing went public.....holding off for now.....but it will become attractive at some level certainly.

          It has a value.

ON the note of value......a little Kiwi founded company that did a small amount of social media work for my company last year just got acquired by Google for a reported $250 million today.

If you watched the movie "The Social Network" the portrayal of Zuckerman (supposedly accurate) was that of an ass who didn't care who he stepped on, what he did that might offend anyone, or what anyone thought. Couple that with a Wall Street that was looking for a 'big score' on the most anticipated IPO ever, coupled with questionable ad revenue, metrics that seemed to be implying a slowing of growth, etc and... well.. i just saw this as some kind of 'pump & dump'. I told my friend as much right before the IPO after watching all the articles that had been coming up on ZH etc. Of course he didn;t want to hear any of it.

I know he put several hundred grand into it pre-IPO by almost a year. I don;t know what he paid per share, but I would guestimate somewhere between $26 and $35.

The market cap is going down even more! Share price fallen by 2.83% till now.

It now seems that the Monthly Active Users (MAU) figure may have been fiddled with around the IPO time.

And up to 83 million accounts may not be real!

I didn't know this, thanks for posting. This helps explain where some of the negative press is coming from.

OMG, one couldn't make this stuff up...

The inside jokes just never end.

I would have thought Google would have acquired HearSay Social, started by one of their former employees, as their in the same space. In any event, the social media network of the future will be owned, controlled and operated by the multinational consumer facing companies. I wonder what this means for networks like LinkedIn?

That was very enlightening, thanks for sharing that. As a slight tangent from one of the slides (#12), I had no idea there was "heatmap" click detection software available for webmasters. Very cool.

It's practically official, FaceBook is down almost 50% from their $38 IPO price, after another 4.3% loss today.

Facebook: More than 83 million users are fake

                      NBC News

People with multiple Facebook accounts, profiles for pets, “zombie blondes.” These are a few examples of the 83.09 million fake users Facebook revealed this week as part of the social network's first public quarterly earnings report.

Back in March, Facebook said between 42.25 million and 50.70 million users. were fake

The jump in numbers doesn't denote a jump in false accounts, but Facebook's increased transparency in tracking, as is required of a public company, Protlanski explains. "Before it only listed duplicate and false users, and now Facebook has broken down the latter number further: duplicate accounts,"

As anyone whose ever had his or her Facebook profile created in the guise of the beloved family dog, cat or parrot can tell you, Facebook is pretty active in detecting and deactivating accounts that violate its terms of service. In regards to such users, Facebook states in its public filing, "We are continually seeking to improve our ability to identify duplicate or false accounts and estimate the total number of such accounts, and such estimates may be affected by improvements or changes in our methodology."

Except, apparently, for its advertising eyeball billing.

My dog has had a facebook account for years. The profile picture is a dog. The profile info clearly indicates that he's a dog. Facebook has been the exact opposite of "pretty active" in detecting and deactivating the account.

He is honestly an ideal facebook user: His main goal is getting attention and as an animal that will urinate while you watch, privacy does not seem to be a paramount concern.

However, lacking a job or other income he is not the ideal advertising target. Although to be more serious, it does require a human to actually look at the page.

On the topic of who actually clicks on ads anyway: I was talking about these FB issues to a friend who said the only time she ever clicks on an ad on FB is while using her ipad the screen takes a second to scroll and she accidentally hits the ad instead of a picture or whatever. I'm guessing this is true for almost everyone.

Speaking of FB on mobile devices: Facebook has a terrible mobile app. It's honestly shocking to me how it could be so bad given that software development is at the core of the company...or was anyway.

Re: Facebook IS going to get KILLED!

LOL re: dog. I also had my brother's dog on my FB, but then he died. I also contributed to one of those 83 million fake users as I had a fake acct to test how well protected my profile was from non-friend snoopers. I had to create this fake account for testing my profile because it seemed facebook was changing privacy settings to undesirable defaults every few months which would expose my profile or parts-there-of.

And yeah the Android facebook app is horrible! Heck my blackberry app is better, though not perfect. And surfing FB on my samsung tablet via their webpage, the scrolling is totally messed up when viewing pictures or comments. They seriously need better quality control.

All the 'heat map' is, is mapping analytics numbers of clicks to the location on the web page where the page reference is shown. The heat map thus isn't showing the clicks per se - a click on the page which doesn't go anywhere wouldn't be recorded - but rather is a backwards reference from pages visited.

Given what was talked about in the Augustine presentation, I'm not so sure it is to Facebook's interest to optimize their mobile experience.

For one thing, it is unclear the mobile Facebook app can even show 7 ads...

Maybe so. It seems like a dangerous/idiotic strategy to try to maintain dominance as a social network by purposefully offering sub par mobile experience as a way of forcing people to use their PC.
