Actually this article is just referring to the State Department recommendation. Obama still has to make the final decision on the pipeline.

      Let me see:-
Prez facing MEGA unemployment is offered a project that will employ a LARGE number of people & might promise cheaper gas prices.............I wonder how long he think about it before he signs it?

The deal was already done ... F35s & Libyan support for a pipeline.

We get expensive toys that are arguably not even as good as the F18s they'll replace ... and the US gets an increasingly stable oil supply.

Fair trade ... at least in somebody's eyes.

FYI - engines for the F35s are not included. They are "extra".

If the new F35s are going to be used in future to bomb countries like Libya...

          Updated:
...they probably don't need to be very good.

We could probably revert to the old North American/Canadair F-86 Sabres and still win that sort of lopsided fight, n'est-ce pas? Although I will grant that engines would be a useful accessory...

Ouch. An old mentor (may he R.I.P.) of mine worked on the Avro Arrow. If half of what he told me is true - then "OH SO different" is truly an understatement

Well, since we'll probably going back to Korea in the future with our American brothers ... you just might be on to something

As for the engines ... maybe we should just re-manufacture the Orenda Iroquois again

I say we throw in a second pipeline for free and also send down all the polluted water and air toxins.

To Adeptus and the Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, and all of that eco-bunch, especially in British Columbia: Would you rather that we buy oil from Iran, the Taliban, Al Qaide, Hamas, Syria, Pakistan, among others in the Middle East?

Steve, they would rather you continue starving.

I prefer we 'buy' oil from those 'other' countries. That is what a good Empire does. But, it appears that Canada has already ended up on the "Please Exploit Me" list. Of course the U.S. wants to build a pipeline. It is a great idea for the U.S. We get oil. Canada gets paper and a wrecked province.

It is good to exploit the resources of others before tapping your own reserves of it from a pseudo-Malthusian perspective.

Let's be clear though--there is no ambiguity on the matter of whether Canadian oil sand reserves will be exploited in increasing quantities. Oil is the magic that makes the modern world possible, so no price will prove to be too high. Local devastation of an area is, in fact, a small price to pay for the lives and livelihoods of billions.

Pipeline or no pipeline the tar sands will be mined until there is none left. There are rumors that heavy crude from the tar sands will be exported to Europe via this pipline. I am no expert but it may be cheaper to make diesel with it than gasoline for US consumption. I would think in a time where peak cheap oil is nigh we will put this pipeline into service along with many more simply because few of us here are ready for anything else.

Absolutely! Unless of course it is YOUR area. NIMBY

Alberta shall be sacrificed. The American way of life is non-negotiable.

Hopefully, the mines are all up north where land is cold and useless anyway. Maybe they can plant some trees when they are done?

Canada will get the jobs, the taxes, the trade surplus, the strong beaver buck, the prosperity, the spin-off industries, the northern development, not to mention affordable OIL for a century or more.

America will get a reliable oil supply and some jobs too. The world will get some relief from the strangle-hold of OPEC. The technology of up-grading heavy oil and tar will help the entire civilized world..... This is a win-win-win for everyone except the terrorists in the Middle East.

Take a minute and look at the Tar Sands with Google Earth. They're an absolutely minuscule area of land comparatively. The Tar Sands area itself isn't going to be the environmental disaster we're told it must be "because, you know, oil is messy", it's the pipeline ruptures from both accidents and environmental sabotage that are the real risk. Think of its potential as an above-ground BP gulf disaster. But whatever: USA USA USA!!!!
