    U.S. defeats Canada in men's hockey, 5-3

    February 21, 2010 | 7:03 pm

A subdued crowd watches as the U.S. goes on the power play with 18:15 left in the third. U.S. has been 0 for 2 on power plays so far this game.
Make that 0 for 3 as they really can't get anything going. Drew Doughty of the Kings, playing for Canada, took a hard shot off the hip, though, and seemed to be in pain. You have to hope it's nothing serious.
U.S. gets another power-play opportunity with 13:55 remaining, as Corey Perry is called for slashing. And this time they convert, as Jamie Langenbrunner scores on a shot that deflected in off of Shea Weber of Canada's skate. 4-2 U.S. And the crowd is eerily quiet.
Midway through the third period, the U.S. leads, 4-2, as Ryan Miller continues to look like Jim Craig in the "Miracle on Ice" game. Canada has seemingly outshot the U.S. about 107-8, yet trail by two.
Now it's Canada's turn on the power play, as Patrick Kane is called for holding with 9:11 remaining. By the way, there are two Canadian and two U.S. officials calling the game, so there's equal homerism on both sides.
And Canada can't convert, as the power play ends with Sidney Crosby tripping over Miller and landing in the net. Still 4-2 U.S. with seven minutes to go.
Canada goes on another power play with 5:13 to play, and swarm Miller, but again he stands tall, stopping a couple of point-blank shots and making saves that seem impossible. Until, with six seconds left in the power play, Crosby deflects a Rick Nash pass across the slot. U.S. still leads, 4-3. And the crowd jumps back on the bandwagon, making noise, Canada has outshot the U.S., 40-21, so far this game.
The last two minutes were some of the most amazing hockey you will ever see. The U.S. couldn't clear it out of their zone. Canada just peppered the net. With a minute left, Canada pulled Martin Brodeur for the extra attacker, and the U.S. gets control and Ryan Kesler puts the puck in the net with 44.7 seconds left. And the crowd jumps back off the bandwagon.
And that's how the game ends. One of the more exciting games you will ever see. Final score: U.S. 5, Canada 3.

Congrats to the USA mens team. That was some serious goal tending! And I agree that was a nice fast paced game and a joy to watch...unlike so many of the grind-em-out NHL games these days.

Was a fun game. I normally don't like many sports, but a good show is a good show regardless.

Also, the advertisement for this thread was great entertainment too! :p

Not exactly a pretty finish. But they'll give your boys a better show than the Finns did today...;)

Perhaps goverment health care allows more people to follow thier dreams, start innovative companies, play sports, ect... rather than spend thier lives as corporate wage slaves just in order to recieve health insurance.

The more I think about it, the more I realize America is one of the least free countries on earth, well in the western world. A german or canadian is absolutly much more free then a American today is.

After college, you are bascially locked into corporate American wage-slave jobs in order to pay back loans and recieve health care benefits.

In Canada and Germany it is very common for college grads to spend a few years working in different industries, traveling the world, volunteering, .. trying to figure out what they want to dedicate thier lives too...

... only the rich in America have the same luxury and they do take it. Most rich kids I now did the same thing after college until they settled down into what they really wanted to do.

I can pretty much guarantee that by 3PM Sunday Canada will have shut down completely. At this point it is no longer about sports. It's about being Canadian.

That, and a team of Americans who desperately want to crush our spirit will make this a classic event. It's a game impossible to call and a game we absolutely have to win.

                    National gut check weekend.

How many months until American football begins? I'm really sorry, I don't even care about the "Miracle on Ice", how can anyone care about this? I love Canada but do my kids have to play with a puck? How do you throw a spiral with it?

Not sure - but it appears the loss to US was meaningless. They way people carried on -it gave the impression the US won the Gold medal outright -that day. Apparently this is not the case. Looking forward to see what happens in the real game.

Speaking as a Canadian, it's never meaningless when Canada plays ice hockey against the USA [or Russia]... If we lose there will be at least three days of official national mourning...and much Molsons will be consumed. Of course much Molsons will also be consumed when we win...which we will...

As for santafe2's sentiments about American football...well they don't even play that on real grass any more, do they? Worse still, if we cross the border to watch a game they force us to drink Budweiser...Yuk!
