The purpose of a dam to is hold back water until it overflows. The controversy was the dam opened the flood gates in late June even when the water levels were much lower than a couple years before, leading to speculation that the dam was structurally weaker than it was previously.

For me, the smoking gun is the unusually strong official denials even when main stream media haven't really taken up the issue.

Agreed, I think they mis understood what the CCP has said, it can only hold back the water till it reaches the top.....at that point it will pour over.

Every business lives a full life and then dies; some live a very long life, such as universities for many centuries; but today we live in a world that has created both great change, and consequential great opportunity.

The concrete was produced by an American corporation. It is the largest dam of it's type. There are always lessons to be learned when stretching beyond existing knowledge. The image showing a massive drift of some of the sections may well be contrived. One would need to go to the dam to visually confirm such movement. Every dam is designed to remain safe when the flow over tops the dam spillways. There is no reason to believe this dam was designed otherwise.

If this thing blows, what sort of cost is China looking at?
