Re: Offset ShadowStats Demonization
Sorry this is so huge
We've all seen the data. We've all seen the graphs. Housing, for a century, has bumped along with the inflation rate. The bubble was an historical exception. The rest is (BLS) bullshit.

Re: Offset ShadowStats Demonization
It isn't clear from - looking at other posts - that this is a real estate cheerleader site. If anything, the opposite.
While the ad hominem attack on John Williams was certainly inappropriate, nonetheless the observation that Shadowstats' inflation seems to outpace home price increases is certainly a valid concern.
It would have been better to address that with a conversation with Mr. Williams rather than a generic attack. For one thing, the housing price increase vs. inflation comparison points using 2001 is not a good example - it is generally accepted that the housing bubble was 2003 to 2006. In this context then the example could be quite accurate.
I think a comparison of home price increases in the 2003-2006 period vs. Shadowstats would show a clear disconnect, and furthermore the impact of a 3 years' bubble would echo longer than the more measured inflation increases. Specifically that a housing bubble which doubled average housing prices vs. perhaps a 12% inflation increase; even a consistent 5% increase for both housing and inflation would see housing get even more above 'norm' despite an identical rate increase going forward.
