So what do you itulpers think: are all those poor fellows who lost their millions going to be bailed out? I mean 25 billion to help keeping some blue collar workers their jobs seems hard sell but 50 billion to bail out some millionairs? Well what do you think?

It's fraud and the SIPC is likely to step in, after the shock calms down a bit and folk get in touch with their Congress critters... and the SIPC will need funding to do it.Comment

Word around here is that Madoff was a member of a very exclusive predominantly Jewish country club in the north part of Palm Beach Island (the really exclusive part).
Many of his fellow club members invested with him and it has shaken that country club and many members of the wealthy Jewish elite badly.GregComment

SEC Chairman, Christopher Cox:
"The Commission has learned that credible and specific allegations regarding Mr. Madoff's financial wrongdoing, going back to at least 1999, were repeatedly brought to the attention of SEC staff, but were never recommended to the Commission for action. I am gravely concerned by the apparent multiple failures over at least a decade to thoroughly investigate these allegations or at any point to seek formal authority to pursue them."

Lawsuits are already in the wind against SEC regulation failure- Due Diligence comes to mind- a public bailout in any other lingo. After all, the $50B is gone and these aren't Pennsylvania school teachers' pensions were talking about :eek:

NEW YORK: Bernard Madoff, the New York financier who the authorities say has confessed to a $50 billion Ponzi scheme, will not be going to jail even though he failed to meet the original terms of his $10 million bail agreement.
U.S. government prosecutors said they had modified the terms of Madoff's agreement so that he would not need to find four people to co-sign his bond. Madoff was unable to meet that condition, prosecutors said. Even his sons, Andrew and Mark, were apparently unwilling to help. A lawyer for the sons said they were unaware of the scheme and were cooperating with the authorities.

The latest: Madoff has agreed to house arrest in New York. He will be under private surveillance, as much or more for his own protection as anything else. He agreed to wear an electronic monitor.
It's nice to see Bernie being treated just like the rest of us.
