widely held misconception... the 'people rise up'. no they don't. they sit in the dirt and mud... getting their ass kicked for decades... until someone leads them out. usually a bad guy, who after he comes to power slaughters them.

anyone else catch this reuters story?
Ninety years after Bolshevik revolutionaries shot dead the last tsar, Russians are fighting over who to lionise: Tsar Nicholas II or Josef Stalin. They are vying for first place in an online poll organised by Russian television to choose the greatest hero in the country's history. Soviet state founder Vladimir Lenin is third.

By Friday lunchtime, the last tsar led the survey with 419,476 votes, followed by Stalin with 381,361 and Lenin with 201,285. Some 2.8 million votes had been registered.

Russia's penchant for strong leaders is evident in the poll. Tsars Peter I and Catherine the Great feature in the top 10, along with crusading mediaeval prince Alexander Nevsky. Ivan the Terrible, who murdered his own son, is in 12th place.

maybe if putin kills enough russians he'll make the list, too.

Metalman, 620,000 Americans died in the Civil War and Lincoln is generally regarded as the "greatest U.S. President."

Thanks for posting that - I didn't realise how lawless those riots were -- people shooting unarmed running away and stuff -!

              Great point!

Our society complains about our current president and idolizes Lincoln who suspended habeaus corpus and imprisoned thousands of lawyers, judges, reporters, writers, etc. with dissenting (constitutional) viewpoints. He even signed a warrant to arrest the Chief Justice Roger B. Taney in an attempt to grab power. He's credited with being the great emancipator, but freed the slaves only in the southern states to economically damage the confederates, admitting in a letter to Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase: "The original emancipation proclamation has no legal justification, except as a military measure." And like forementioned led what is still to this day the bloodiest war in American History 620,000 dead, 50,000 of them civilians.

And now we have high school text books already manipulating current history and touting our noble war on terror led by the fearless GW.

And since every country tends to do this, the vast majority of the population becomes more or less blindly nationalistic. That's not gonna cause any problems.
