Gramm guts Glass-Steagall, despite warnings that we would get a repeat of the type of behavior that precipitated the S&L crisis, becomes a major lobbyist for Wall Street (UBS) fighting against any new bank regulations, makes millions in the process, and now calls us a nation of whiners? The guy has balls. To borrow from Jesse Jackson, I'd like to cut his nuts out.

Not that I think Obama is going to save this country, but I certainly don't want Gramm as the next Treasury Secretary.

      LOL

      Anybody remember this?
      Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Balanced Budget Act

The Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985 (Pub.L. 99-177, title II, s December 12, 1985, 99 Stat. 1038, 2 U.S.C. § 900) and Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Reaffirmation Act of 1987 (Pub.L. 100-119, title I, Sept. 29, 1987, 101 Stat. 754, 2 U.S.C. § 900) (both often known as Gramm-Rudman) were, according to U.S. Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, "the first binding constraint imposed on federal spending, and its spending caps have become part of every subsequent U.S. budget. Together with a rapidly growing economy it produced the first balanced federal budget in a quarter of a century."

Phil Gramm lives in a different world from the average American. A world described in the new book "Richistan", where losing your job means a golden parachute, where you and all your friends are VERY rich and powerful.

In making such a stupid, politically insensitive statement, he was speaking from the viewpoint of these Masters of the Universe, who are so far removed from the type of existence most Americans live in, they have trouble even imagining it and empathizing with the less fortunate.

At least it's caused an uproar. Hopefully, some lower middle class Americans who vote for these neo-conservative predators have heard Phil's message and will wake and smell the coffee.

As his homework, next Phil should read Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Nickeld and Dimed" to learn about the VERY REAL daily struggles of America's bottom half, to earn enough money to pay their bills and support their families.

There are others. Gerry Callahan, long-time columnist for the Boston Herald and a co-host of WEEI-850's "morning drive-time show" is a GOP, ass-kissing puke that openly mocks regular, working people for daring to say that the U.S. economy is anything but an unstoppable powerhouse. And in general, anyone that talks of recession is part of or acting on behalf of a "mainstream-media conspiracy to get Obama elected". I guess we're not far enough along yet for this POS to have been tarred, feathered and chased into hiding.

Who pays Gramm, Satan? Reading a book isn't going to teach that old dog anything new.

babbit, it's nice to see you forcefully expressing yourself here. Good man!

Gramm is a politician and politicians are shit, probably without exception once they are sworn it and get their membership cards.

Possible exception: While I don't agree with everything Ron Paul stands for, I have a lot of respect for his refusal to endorse McCain. He is sticking to his principles rather than toeing the party line. Of course, you could argue that he is already so marginalized within his own party that he has more to lose by endorsing McCain (his supporters).

If most of these guys (Republicans and Democrats) are in the pockets of banks, big biz and the powerful lobbies, and if the public is too stupid to realize it or too apathetic to care, while the Libertarians are too insistent on maintaining their pure platform (which the public will never accept), how do we get real change here, rather than shifting back and forth between Reps and Dems, whose big picture policies are not all that different?

Take one to know one. No mystery there. Gramm is McCann's Economic Chief Advisor, and McCann has been talking about American's psychological problem in relation to today's market/recession for some time... "Fairly", yet sadly, to say that Gramm is only following his "boss" footstep and leadership.

It's your "psychological" problem that you distrust your government and have no confidence in your government and the market!

Barring some untoward natural disaster that wipes out the Washington elected politicians, the next best bet will be armed revolt. No telling how bad things must get for the latter to occur. Look at Zimbabwe, no overt revolting going on there. Perhaps evolution has made current day man into a more sheep-like organism.

The reason we won't get armed revolt is b/c the government's military is too powerful for armed militias to overthrow. If the opposition can't acquire the power/weapons to overthrow Mugabe, there's zero chance of it occurring in the US.

Look at how the student protest movement of the 1960s was repelled by police and national guard. Imagine how many Kent State U's we would have had if the students had been more militant. Maybe a military coup, but no armed popular revolt.

Molly Ivins article on Phil Gramm in 2002. Phil hasn't changed at all, see quotes below. What's changed are the times.

With more and more working poor and middle class Americans being severely stretched by offshoring, lay-offs, rising inflation and gas prices, stagnate wages, it's harder now for Phil to get away with the obnoxious remarks he's used to making.

Incredible Phil-isms from article. Also note that Phil has spent most of his life collecting government benefits or paychecks.

"When he ran for president in 1996 and finished fifth in Iowa...During a Senate debate over Social Security, a member pointed out that the proposal under consideration would hurt 80-year-old retirees. "Most people don't have the luxury of living to be 80 years old," Gramm scoffed, "so it's hard for me to feel sorry for them."

"During the fight over health care reform, Gramm said, "We have to blow up this train and the rails and the trestle and kill everyone on board." When an elderly widow in Corsicana told him that cutting Medicare would make it more difficult for her to remain independent, Gramm said, "You haven't thought about a new husband, have you?"

"Gramm, the great crusader against government spending, has spent his entire life on the government tit. He was born at a military hospital, raised on his father's Army pay, went to private school at Georgia Military Academy on military insurance after his father died, paid for his college tuition with same, got a National Defense Fellowship to graduate school, taught at a state-supported school, and made generous use of his Senate expense account."
