    Seems a bit ironic that in this age of climate change concerns, $130 crude, $5.00 diesel, and pressure to be more "socially responsible" that the Canadian labour movement is mounting such an effort to keep a GM pick-up truck plant open. Dripping with hypocrisy, non?

    CUPE is the Canadian Union of Public Employees; membership includes most of the government sector employees. CUPE and its members have been among the most vocal proponents of more Canadian government action on climate change [of course if the government "does more" for climate change, that means it will need more CUPE workers to "do more"].

    There is nothing more democratic than workers standing up for the right to good jobs, strong communities and good government public policy.

    This is why it is important for Ontario CUPE members to show visible solidarity for our auto worker brothers and sisters as they stand up to General Motors (GM) to defend their jobs and the local economy of many Ontario communities where CUPE members provide quality public services.

    I am encouraging CUPE members who are able to join CAW 222 members for a rally on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 12:00 noon at the GM headquarters in Oshawa (Colonel Sam Drive), the site of a CAW 222 blockade for the past week...
