US says it has no plans to invade Cuba
    August 18, 2006 (Rustomgee)

The United States said on Friday it had no plans to invade Cuba, after its communist interim leader, Raul Castro, said he had ordered a mobilisation to counter a US invasion threat.

"The United States has no plans to invade Cuba," said Eric Watnik, a State Department spokesman, reiterating remarks made by Tom Shannon, the top US diplomat for the region, since Fidel Castro temporarily ceded power to his brother on July 31 following major surgery.

In his first public statement as interim ruler, published by the Communist Party newspaper Granma, Raul Castro said he had mobilized tens of thousands of reservists and militia members to face a possible US invasion threat.

AntiSpin: Sometimes it takes us all day to find just the right Daily News story. The notion that the US is going to invade Cuba is, of course, outlandish and an obvious ploy by Fidel's brother to assert his leadership by inventing a crisis. Getting the US state department to say, "We have no plans to invade Cuba" is equivalent to forcing a political opponent in an Old South style local election in the US to get in from of the press and assert that he does not in fact beat his wife.

The Bush adminstration is starting to make the Carter administration look confident and competent by comparison.

Recently we stated "stick a fork in it" on the housing bubble. By taking this bait, the Bush administration is announcing it's as good as cooked, too. In case you hadn't already noticed.

i don't think it's so stupid for raul to consider this. after all, we DID invade cuba. 1961 i recall. and we DID invade afghanistan, and we SURE DID invade iraq. of course cuba didn't make it to the axis of evil club, and the reality is that i don't think even this administration, stupid as it is, would be so stupid as to invade cuba right now - we don't have the spare troops and other resources, the cuban vote in florida is already pretty much in the bag for the republicans, and most importantly - no oil.

btw- if you were in the axis of evil club, in charge of iran, and saw the difference between how we treated iraq and how we treat no. korea, you'd ask: got nukes?

It was stupid to try to invade Cuba then and even more stupid now, and Fidel's bro knows it. This was a political ploy.

Indeed nukes appear to be the dictators' ticket to sovereignty, a cynic might even say, to freedom. And if you don't have them yet, you stall for time to get them...

Romania says oil rig attacked by Iran, Tehran denies

BUCHAREST, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Romanian oil firm Grup Servicii Petroliere said on Tuesday one of its offshore rigs in the Gulf, involved in a legal dispute, had reported coming under fire from an Iranian navy ship and being boarded by troops. An Iranian oil official denied the reports, saying military force was not used against the Orizont platform, which had been charted by United Arab Emirates-based Oriental Oil Company. GSP spokesman Radu Petrescu told Reuters: "We were called by one of our employees at 9.15 a.m. local time (0615 GMT), who told us a military ship opened fire against the Orizont rig, and by 9.45 Iranian troops got on board." "By 4 p.m. the troops left the rig and judicial officers came on board. In between, we had no contact with the crew."

are you implying that raul has faith that this administration isnt "even more stupid" than kennedy in his first days in office?

most likely raul kind of disappeared for a while and martialled the troops to see if anyone would start dancing in the streets in havana the way they did in miami. then crack down. but this is far afield.

more relevant is iran, which signals again and again that it is will be treated as the region's major power. what a great part of the globe to base our economy on!
