"The gap between the richest and the poorest in the U.S. has more than doubled from 1989 to 2016.

The economist and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has argued that income inequality is the defining issue for the U.S.

To put it another way, the top wealthiest 1% possess 40% of the nation's wealth, while the bottom 80% own only 7%."

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

America needs to turn socialist, but will only do it when it has exhausted all other options.

Capitalism is great. Unfettered crony capitalism is what got us into this mess. Why is their alternative to crony capitalism always socialism (and when that isn't enough, communism)? Can't they read a frikkin' history book?! Can't they think up something better? I'm open to new ideas. I'm not open to embracing failed strategies.

Redistribution of wealth, whether due to regulatory capture by crony capitalists or government control via socialists, leads to failure every time. I refuse to accept that these are our only two options.

Thanks Shiny, couldn't agree more. Wages (or payments from the public dole) are the base of the food chain for an economy. A little regulation on businesses and a little redistribution from the wealthy are OK by me -it's a small price to pay to keep the velocity of money higher and the rate of petty crime lower. The hard working go-getters of the world will always do OK, even if they need to pay a few more taxes or comply with a few extra regulations.

To quote one of the wits around here "Free market capitalism is great, we should try it."
                .

You can't have free market capitalism without governments regulating them its been tried and it ends with financial firms overstretching themselves, bank runs, depressions.

There seems to me be a high correlation to high spending governments and AAA ratings.

Is there any correlation between high spending states and happiness.

                          Mature states usually know best.

States have a soul, while humans probably not.

If you include just Moody’s then New Zealand and Netherlands are another 2 AAA/happy correlations, leaving out only Iceland.

                              Yes.

I'm trying to show the long held view that governments don't know how to spend money. I think its actually the opposite with in reason that citizens are the one that make bad choices.
