I was more shocked to hear they ever arrested him in the first place. That clearly was never part of the plan. Arrested in early July; dead in early August. His death fits much more in line with my preconceptions here:

        I know, right?

Government is so incompetent they can't even keep a prisoner in solitary held in the lockdown of their maximum security detention center from offing himself, the poor dumb ufks.

But let's put them in charge of our healthcare system!

depends on what their true intentions were, doesn't it? i'd guess they succeeded quite well. i wish someone could run our healthcare system as efficiently and as unobtrusively.

"Johnston, like Lee, never forgot the magnanimity of the man to whom he surrendered. He would not allow criticism of Sherman in his presence. Sherman and Johnston corresponded frequently, and they met for friendly dinners in Washington whenever Johnston traveled there.

When Sherman died, Johnston served as an honorary pallbearer at his funeral. During the procession in New York City on February 19, 1891, he kept his hat off as a sign of respect, although the weather was cold and rainy. Someone concerned for his health asked him to put on his hat, to which Johnston replied, "If I were in his place and he were standing here in mine, he would not put on his hat."

He caught a cold that day, which developed into pneumonia. Johnston died several weeks later in Washington, D.C."

                      That's fun.

And much better to laugh than to look at the event rationally and ask some simple questions. Like how an unrepentant global child sex trafficker, who once compared his crimes to stealing a bagel, could be so cozy with princes, presidents, and prime ministers? Or how in his previous run-ins with the law could receive such kid glove treatment from Democratic and Republican prosecutors, and why one would claim a nexus with "intelligence" as exculpation? Or how despite it being long-known that his nefarious activities implicated some of the richest and most powerful people on Earth as pedophiles, the media treated the story by ignoring it or dismissing it as a fevered conspiracy theory? Or how once lured back to the States, Epstein was arrested and soon died in the most secure wing of a most secure federal facility - used to detain terrorists and other high-value prisoners - on the very night that the first of his case files were unsealed? Or how he was alleged to have attempted suicide - or was attacked, the authorities are still coy on the details - only days earlier, but was apparently taken off the suicide watch list in contravention to every usual and customary practice in such matters? Or how other similar protocols were apparently not followed with this most high-visibility prisoner; why there's no surveillance video, or why the autopsy has apparently been completed but the Medical Examiner’s Office needs “further information” before determining a cause of death?

Because if we did, might it become undeniable that what is said to be a suicide would appear more like a blatantly transparent extralegal execution? Might we have to then ask more uncomfortable questions? And having asked them, would we be compelled to demand action? And who then would we petition? Or, would we then having understood this "suicide" as something more like a note of caution - a warning to those whose allegiances are suspect or imagine themselves some sort of do-gooder intent on seeking justice to back off - consider the consequences and wisely heed it? Might it then sound as if the folks running the Epstein operation - if that's what it was - would be saying, "Think twice. We can get to anyone. And what are you going to do about it anyway, rubes?

As palliative as humor is in soothing our ruffled sensibilities about how the world works, and the proclivities of those in power, or the depraved lengths some vectors of power will go exercise their authority, I imagine Epstein's victims can't see the joke. Think about it. If you’re one of Prince Andrew’s alleged victims, or Bill Richardson's, or George Mitchell's, or Alan Dershowitz's - all who have naturally denied any wrongdoing and should be presumed innocent - do you come forward knowing that Epstein wasn't safe even in the Guantanamo of Manhattan? What sort of memories are dredged up when you see pictures of Ehud Barak stepping in and out of Epstein's mansion and how do his denials and the media's perfunctory acceptance of them and their general lack of curiosity make you feel? If you were one of Epstein’s victims, would you feel safe right now? Would it be rational for Virginia Giuffre, the main litigant, to feel any concern about her prospects for longevity? And what of Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of Robert Maxwell (who had quite a curious history himself); should she be concerned, even if to date Epstein's admitted procurer and madam has faced no consequences and little relative scrutiny?

And to your last point and DC's, maybe we could ask why indeed "they" would choose to dispense of this man so brazenly, so blatantly, and do it so sloppy when they no doubt have the means to have finessed it in a dozen different, less obtrusive ways? Why would they have chosen this way, if indeed a choice it was? Is it really colossal incompetence? Or could it be someone else is issuing a taunt, as if to say "So, what? You think you can do a thing about it? Just try us”?

But maybe we're all missing the real joke. Maybe the punchline is that the USA, long since suspected, has with this event and those to follow in its immediate wake, been confirmed as a banana republic as much as was Trujillo's Dominican Republic or Batista's Cuba?

Is there any maybe about it? At least at the higher echelons this is obviously true and has been for some time to anyone paying attention.

How do you think Harold Hardin felt to see his wife Oleta killed by Alice Walton, only to have prosecutors drop the case, and her to receive not so much as a single ticket for that DUI death resulting? Not the first DUI under her belt either. How about the families of Kathleen McCormick, Susan Berman, or Morris Black, all of whom likely died by Robert Durst's hands? The only billionaire ever convicted of murder was John du Pont, and only then because he slaughtered Dave Schultz, who was famous in his own right. And speaking of the du Pont family, wealth, power, and pedophiles, how many little babies and toddlers was Robert Richards IV accused of molesting again? I've lost count. And what did Delaware Superior Court Judge Jan Jurden say about it? That he should get no jail time because he "wouldn't fare well behind bars." How did Greg Faull die? Why do dead people show up on John McAfee's property? Why does he just ignore subpoenas and flee countries when blood gets spilled with no consequences? Speaking of ignoring subpoenas...
