Mega, 432 drug ods in 2017 in England and Wales seems like nothing from this side of the pond. What is that out of, like 60 million people? New Hampshire has 1 million people and had 483 alone in 2017.

Let me show you what a country without an NHS can do:

        Re: Who's fault?

I thought about drug use a lot over the last 35 years or so..........Mega smoked a bit of weed in his youth............then nothing.

Legal-ise?.................it would cut drug deaths but not drug use..........i been the victum of crime many times........am told its not their fault, cause they drug users.

I think i have the short & long term answers:-

        a. Posion the drugs, kill off the probem
        b. Kill off single mothers whom "Breed" the problem.

Well, the good news from your perspective is carfentanyl is basically already poison, and we're on track to have 100,000 dead in 2018 alone over here.

I guess my point was just that it is a private matter in the US, or at least a much more private matter than in the UK, and the result is instead of almost reaching 500 deaths per 60mil people (0.0008% dead per year), we're already pushing 100,000 deaths for 300mil people (0.03% dead per year). So more people do die that way. It's unquestionable. I'm just not sure that there's a hard limit on users. Kind of like how fads spread. People who've never used before pick up and start every day.

And yet the Iron Lady ran a state and used it to brutalize people and wage war. There's something Patrick McGee didn't do...

Only point I was making is that when leaders on the right complain about statism, they usually do it from behind armed guard on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Thatcher hated statism so much she sent her Majesty's Navy to the other side of the world to conquer a couple islands with more sheep than people on them.

And she hated taxes so much, she put a special poll tax on the Scots only.

And that's not touching what she did to Bobby Sands &co, given all they were asking was treatment as political prisoners under the geneava convention. But she refused. Must have decided that state really had to turn the screws on that one...wonder why ...

                        Re: Who's fault?

Who's fault? My pet theory, backed by nothing but a hunch, is that the current opiod epidemic in the U.S. is a direct result of the 2008 financial crisis. Millions of people were suddenly unemployed and stayed that way for a long stretch of time. When their unemployment benefits ran out, they filed for disability to keep a monthly check coming in.

Well, I once saw a pain-management specialist for my bad back. What I like is to have a small amount of Hydrocodone on hand for when I get pinched nerves. I don't take them often, and then only one or two for a day or two at most (because I don't want to get addicted). A bottle of 10 tablets can last me a year or more. Been this way for over 40 years.

The doctor told me that if I wanted a prescription, I would have to come in every month to pee in a cup. If they didn't see evidence of opiate in my urine, they would assume that I was selling the drugs and would cancel my prescription. What kind of crazy policy is that??? In order to keep my prescription, I would have to take a potentially addictive drug when I didn't need it, just to prove I needed it. That, to me, was a recipe for addiction. I said No and walked out.

But think about everyone who was forced to lie to their doctor in order to stay on disability:

"Doc, my back hurts so bad, I can't work."

"Alright, here's a prescription for Hydrocodone. Take them, or else we'll assume you don't need them, and if you don't need them, then you probably don't need to be on disability, either."

Feeling hopeless and depressed because you're unemployed? Well, these pills make you feel pretty darned good! And the doctor's going to make you pee in a cup to prove that you're taking them. Do that long enough and you're addicted.

Look at the charts that dcarrigg posted above. The rise of overdose deaths related to heroin began in 2011, about 2-3 years after the financial crisis. That chart is totally different than the one for cocaine deaths. Heroin is what pain-pill addicts go to when they can't get pills. Just saying...

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

We have a case like this in my family. I suspect most families in the Rust Belt do if they dig deep enough. I believe his insurance is through the VA, but he may be on Medicaid or Medicare as primary.

At one point he complained to me in the hospital that he could only get ten Oxy a month since the recent prescription crackdown, and he used to get 30 a week(!). All I could think was that the prescribing doctor must’ve had a sweet time at the annual convention in Tahiti or wherever.

I can’t help but think that many of his medical issues (and there are various) are iatrogenic and first arose during the years that he was on the nod four times a day from the good doctor.

I don’t believe that he’s moved to street drugs yet.

From a public health standpoint, the numbers are startling and cause for concern. From 50 miles away it's easy to look at prescription abuse by doctors and pharmaceutical marketing practices. The view from 10,000 feet is that the GFC is part of the problem (and I don't disagree).

Up close it’s sickening, and the individual cases are hopeless.
