My earliest recollection of a pundit similar to this is Howard Ruff in the late 1970s. Back in those pre-internet, pre-faxmachine days one of my engineering classmates had a subscription to his newsletter which arrived in the mail every couple of weeks, and used to get passed around the study hall. As I remember Ruff recommended hoarding cash (bags of junk silver was the recommended form in those days) and stashing away lots of food for the coming calamity. Of course the disastrous future was going to be the result of rampant inflation that was just around the corner because the Fed was "about to loose control".

Then came Volcker, to show us the danger of taking a trendline (any trendline), mindlessly extrapolating it to infinity, then drawing conclusions.

Yes, it's doomer hype. Every household should have an emergency supply of cash, food, water, needed medications, etc. on hand in case of a natural disaster or something that causes a temporary disruption of electricity, water supply, etc. People who live in hurricane and earthquake areas, tornado alley etc., know this.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

I had a friend then who took a class on how to make your own shoes with materials you were likely to have around the house. Hopefully, he still has the pair he made.

LOL. Ya, they know it. But human nature being what it is, I'll bet most of them don't do anything about it...

That's right, they don't do it. Thus the panic rushes for bottled water and plywood as the hurricane is coming.

Well it's no fun facing TEOTW without toilet paper.

And who could have imagined TP could be turned into a weapon of mass destruction?

The entire west is in an unprecedented drought, with forest fires blazing everywhere, but apparently some people must strive for ecological perfection no matter how illogical the action:

                    24 Jul 2015

On Wednesday, a cyclist traveling through the Hulls Gulch Reserve in Boise, Idaho, started a 73-acre fire when he burned the toilet paper he used after pooping in the forest...

However .... how do we measure collapse ... let me count the ways ...

                      1. If you were a steel guy in Youngstown ... that was Sep 19, 1977.
                      2. If you were a union auto guy ... About 1979.
                      3. Mortgage Owner .... 2008
                      4. Native American ... 1492
                      5. Wall Street 1929

My point is that collapse is an interesting concept. I would say the number of people (in the US) that is suffering a non-positive lifestyle as increased since 2000. If you live in North Africa or Venezuela you might think things have "collapsed". I think that sometimes people imagine a casino like situation in which both the house and the players loose simultaneously. To continue this analogy I can think of two situations where that might happen: one is that a tornado (or other act of God) hits the casino but then there is two where one player gets lucky or cheats and becomes the only winner. I am thinking number two is in play here and the one player (or his political crony in the case that started the thread) winning is trying to convince everyone else that a tornado hit. I guess there might be a third option as that is the winning player trying to convince the house and the other players that they are not really losers. That is a hard sell without a war.
