  • Teenage daughter preggers? Shoulda bought that McMansion ..

FIRE has a solution for everything.

    ...

The second paper, Measuring the Benefits of Homeowning: Effects on Children Redux, associates homeownership rates with lower high school dropout rates and lower teen birth rates. Authors Richard Green and Gary Painter, professors at the University of Southern California; and Michelle White, professor at the University of San Diego, conducted the study as a follow-up to similar research 15 years ago.

The paper said after accounting for other factors such as parental education, the dropout rate among children living in owner-occupied homes was 2.6 percentage points lower and the teen birth rate was 5 percentage points lower than for children living in rentals.

Probably came out of a sub-committee at the RE conference EJ attended.

I've heard similar on NAR radio and TV ads. Claiming home ownership will make your kids better looking, smarter, happier, etc. As if its the house itself, not the family who owns the home that matters. Grasping at straws.

Real Estate industry has embedded itself into the very fabric of society. A family member just got married and she is looking forward to buying a home in order to host Thanksgiving Dinner for the extended family. You can't have Thanksgiving Dinner unless you hold a Mortgage. ;-) Sadly, this couple doesn't have the financial resources that are necessary to own a home and survive in todays economy and already holds a Mortgage on an RV. But, buying when interest rates are low and rents are rising is believed to be smart financial move.

Meanwhile, I know at least two families who thought they were secure because of their House and their Mortgage. Until the business failed or extended job loss hit, and then an A/C compressor fails, then the Washing Machine, then the need for a new water heater. Very quickly the family that once felt secure because of their Mortgage/House finds them selves under the gun and stressed out.

When will Americans learn that a Home is where ever you live with your family.

            So true.

I don't know how to verify this, but have heard it said that the American Dream of home ownership for everyone was actually started as a way to reduce demonstrations against the government. Homeowners fearful of missing a mortgage payment aren't as likely to take to the streets in protest, where they risk missing work, getting arrested, losing their jobs and consequently their home.

This is also why health insurance is tied to employment. It keeps people from quitting jobs they hate or rocking the boat because they can't risk losing their health insurance.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

the former is straight from the fed's last boss's mouth, Greenspan. The latter - a creative touch on a 'good idea'.

Thanks, don! I wondered where it came from.
