Economic complexity

Just got around more and more reports on world's economy, and suddenly got here:

I'm just checking it, lots of reports on trade, and the concept of "Economic complexity", meaning how much any country is involved on global trade, spread over the spectrum of trade product classifications... What does a country sells, to whom, and stuff like that...

Just to mark, We, Mexico, are classified as #20 most complex country worldwide... 2nd in the Americas and over any BRIC I'm just studying it to know what it is trying to mean...

It is interesting, but any conclusions have to be taken with a large grain of salt.

For one thing, the United States export graph starts in 1994. That would make it seem that the quality, consistency, and timeliness of data collection is a major factor.

The definition of 'export' is also rather fuzzy. Mexico as a low cost bordering nation to the US has historically had the maquilador type of border manufacturing; it is a little unclear just how organic this type of export is.
