methinks it a mistake to assume solar/wind could ever 'replace' anything - the scale required to merely offset some of the capacity produced by 'conventional' sources makes that seem farfetched indeed - why i dont think The US has any choice but to go nuke, go big or go bust - we need a MACRO game-changer - but - assuming one is located in areas with plentiful year round sunshine (and high kwh rates) solar still makes sense for the individual home/biz, since when its on YOUR roof, it does the most good/has best ROI (esp if ones PV system isnt strictly a grid-tie setup, without batteries - since if the grid goes down and your PV isnt tied to batts, then one is stuck sitting there in the dark, while all that silicon just sits there doin nuthin)

but we do need better batteries to make it really pay off.
