Default Is the TED Spread a reliable indicator?

I've read over and over that the spread typically stays under 50 basis points. So was it not a coincidence that the CB Liquidity Swaps were announced today after the TED spread closed at 51.67 yesterday?

It's been steadily rising since the beginning of August.
