Poland demands US troops defend border

Poland has demanded that US troops be based on Polish soil in the wake of Russian war games which simulated a nuclear attack and invasion.

On the anniversary of the fall of the wall, no less.
Poland who? Without the USA vs. Soviet Union will the west keep the Moscow out of eastern europe. The kremlin will wax and wane. Energy resources and brutal resolve will allow control to be cede to Moscow. But no tanks will be needed. With an era of regionalism on the horizon, just sphere of influence is enough to gain control. I would look out for what currency Poland uses for trade in the next dozen years.

      Poland is in trouble geopolitically.

The separation of European and American interests, as well as the pressures growing within the EU, are 'encouraging' the Germany/Russia strengthening of ties.

      And who's right in between?

probably just part of a larger plan

“U.S. efforts in Romania and Bulgaria are part of a global redeployment strategy started in the early years of the Bush administration to shift U.S. forces out of Germany and move them eastward.”
“The number of US military men at the two bases is not going to be large, but who can say that it will not be doubled, tripped or quadrupled in the future? Furthermore, the appearance of NATO bases on the Black Sea coast will come as an addition to the US military [deployments] in the Baltic region. As a result, Russia will find itself trapped.”
“[T]he new land, sea and airbases along the Black Sea will provide much improved contingency access for deployments into Central Asia, parts of the Middle East and Southwest Asia.”

Poland is much more strongly oriented to western Europe than to Russia. There are far more people alive
who can remember communism than WW II. (And even among the old ones, the sentiment is usually more
pro German or pro Western. ) Many Poles think ( correctly) that Germany is peaceful, but Russia is
            not completely safe.

Russians still have a grandiose view of their role in history, like some Americans.
A Russian politician advances his popularity by bringing satellite territories under Russian domination, or
by justifying the Soviet conquests of 1940-1941.

welcome. what about estonia & latvia?

Estonia experienced a hugely outsized growth in unemployment as a result of a credit crisis triggered by the U.S. Housing Bubble Recession.

Germany is still making claims for Polish west lands(After II war big part of Poland was given to ZSSR and some smaller lands of Germany was given to it) and they don't want to sign any agreement that would sanction the border between Poland and Germany. Before II word war there was waimar republic on the lands of Germany that was peacefull republic few years latter during crisis thy build there III Reich .... Polish people don't trust Germany as well as Russia this is the reason why they look for agreement with US

Re: Poland demands US troops defend border

The Baltic states have the same desire as Poland to be with western Europe economically and culturally.

During WW II, they were conquered by the USSR before Germany attacked. All of them were hit hard by the Soviet occupation. One of them had a major soviet submarine base, and the country was saturated with USSR soldiers and military intelligence (fun, fun).

A major difference is that Poland was not part of the property bubble, and the Baltic states were. Hudson has analyzed this and says their debts are unpayable. He says they started the 1990's debt free. Land and buildings became collateral for borrowing to finance a trade deficit and participate in the housing bubble. When the bubble collapsed, they owed a bunch of Euros, and had only a small export industry to generate foreign currency.

I don't think economic pressure would bring them back into the Russian orbit (as seems to be happening to Byelorussia and the Ukraine). They are in for tough times, and I hope thier sense of fairness helps out the worst off.

If you go to Europe, please don't visit London, Paris, or Italy. Everyone has been there. You can get much more for your dollar in central and eastern europe. There are wonderful buildings, historic sites, museums, and natural places, in Poland, Hungary, Baltic states, etc.

                      Jimmy,
Thanks for the welcome. I greatly enjoyed the Phoenix dollar forum, until
                      it ceased to exist.
