I'd rather have that then welfare. You don't need a bureaucracy to run it, and you don't need anyone to verify benefits, so its cheaper. It would also more or less replace usufruct which is utterly lacking today.

In addition, you would not have all the negative consequences to getting off your ass and making a little money which is discouraged when losing welfare benefits.

Also if it was set high enough, you would get more entrepreneurial activity as one could always fall back to the basic income.
More importantly it would give more respect for the low paid jobs as people would not need to them as they have a basic income.

would like to see this trialled on working adults.

The landlords will see to it that any extra money from basic income is consumed by rent.
