  • Next Bubble story: Who was first?

Professional futurist Harry Dent beats TIME Magazine story on Harper's Magazine Next Bubble story about The Onion's Next Bubble story by three years with his groundbreaking tract "The Next Great Bubble Boom: How to Profit from the Greatest Boom in History: 2006-2010"

The Onion observes that we need another bubble. TIME points out that Harper's Magazine beat The Onion to it. But the Harper's "Next Bubble" piece explains how to make money in a future bubble as much as "Moby Dick" is a book about how to catch a whale*. If TIME is looking for a true next bubble forecast nothing holds a bee's wax candle to Harry's The Next Great Bubble Boom: How to Profit from the Greatest Boom in History: 2006-2010.
    Product Description - 2004

The Next Great Bubble Boom -- part crystal ball, part financial planner -- offers a comprehensive forecast for the next two decades, showing new models for predicting the future behavior of the economy, inflation, large- and small-cap stocks, bonds, key sectors, and so on. In taking a look at past booms and busts, Dent compares our current state to that of the crash of 1920-21, and the years ahead of us to the Roaring Twenties. Dent gives advice on everything from investment strategies to real estate cycles, and shows not only how bright our future will be but how best to profit from it.

Dent gives us all something to look forward to, including:
    • The Dow hitting 40,000 by the end of the decade
    • The Nasdaq advancing at least ten times from its October 2001 lows to around 13,500, and potentially as high as 20,000 by 2009.
    • Another strong advance in stocks in 2005, with a significant correction into around September/October 2006
    • The Great Boom resurging into its final and strongest stage in 2007, and even more fully in 2008, lasting until late 2009 to early 2010

Dent's amazing ability to track and forecast our financial future is renowned, and here he takes that ability to the next level, showing not only what our economy will look like but also how it will affect us as individuals, as organizations, and as a culture. From the upcoming wealth revolution to the essential principles of entrepreneurial success, the book describes a new society where economic and philanthropic development go hand in hand.

In The Next Great Bubble Boom, Dent shows not only how the economic growth of the late 1990s was a prelude to the true great boom right around the corner but how all of us can reap its benefits.

AntiSpin: These past two years were like the Roaring Twenties? The "Great Boom" resurged into its final and strongest stage in 2007 during the first year of the housing market collapse? Shall we hold our breath until the NASDAQ rises six fold from 2,280 today to 13,500 by the end of next year?

We can’t say enough good things about Harry’s book or recommend it too highly.

    * It isn't.

With respect EJ - this conjunction of implications makes no sense to me - how can you have a "true great boom" during a 20 year transition of Peak Cheap Oil where energy prices ratchet inexorably to $500 a barrel and 5000 nuclear energy plants to replace it are a financial and logistical impossibility? This would appear an example of "Panglossian" forecasting run amok. Can you explain this miraculous conjunction?

      Parody job references:

"I can’t say enough good things about Luke or recommend him too highly."

"I feel fortunate to count Luke among my ex-colleagues."

"You will be lucky to get Luke to work for you."

      Get it?

Well FRED, after having summarily deleted my first attempt to post this question, this reply to my second post attempt does not impress much either, in terms of any substantive answer. What is this, a PR venue, or a place where questions are judged on rationality and merit? Eh? Methinks PR, from the substance of the reply.

Lukester: Just accept that EJ is indeed fortunate to have the privilege of acknowledging and endorsing respected author and elder statesman bubble-analyst Harry Dent, in whose considerable sized footsteps EJ and iTulip clearly follow. You wouldn't expect him to pass up an opportunity to pay appropriate homage now, would you? ;)

GRG55 - if these remonstrances were any more arch in their attempt at irony they'd be bowed over into the shape of a pretzel. EJ is forecasting a massive "alt-energy" bubble, last I read. Unless he's in the process of retracting that long standing forecast, at some point his forecast and Harry Dent's overlap, so the attempted irony, which to me appears murky anyway due to this notable confluence of their forecasts, meets a yet murkier demise at some point in our near future - non?

The rest of my response, to FRED's habit of summarily deleting a few posts of mine at whim, which he "objects to", is something I had better not post here, as it is "very frank" in substance as to the merit of such practices, and might injure a few "sensibilities".

Luke, The Onion is a satirical news organization. Justin Fox on the Time.com blog, compared EJ's very serious article in Harper's to a recent article in The Onion, on an even-keeled basis.

This is Antispin, therefore it is a joke.

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other, "does this taste funny to you?"

                *****************

                I love that joke.

Lukester, the key sometimes, is not to overanalyze these things.

a person with a sense of humor will look read this and think a future "bubble" in energy is not the point of the harper's piece. and it isn't.

I guess the key to satire is that your audience must enter in with the understanding that you are not being entirely serious. Barring that, there must be statements in the piece that are so outrageous as to trigger the skeptical mechanism in their minds.

Can't tell you how many times Onion articles have been picked up and repeated by various news outlets (usually local newspapers or radio stations) as though they were real.

I actually got some respect? I'm agog... and you know how painful that can be...

As far as my prediction, I suspect your algorithms do not take the proper doses of gloom, despair, polysorbate 60, chemtrails, banksters, Mary Poppins, garlic and hobgloblins into account.
