thanks, mike. vidal was a brilliant raconteur. my favorite story about him relates to his mutual hatred with norman mailer, with vidal gay and cultured, mailer macho and more a man of the people. in some encounter mailer actually punched vidal and knocked him down. vidal said: "once again, words fail norman mailer."
