What's Changed (iTulip.com, April 17 2010 forum software upgrade)

Rate this Entry
On Saturday, April 17, 2010, iTulip upgraded its forum software from some
vBulletin 3.x version to the current vBulletin 4.0.x version. This means
some new forum software features and a new look. In looking around the
web to see what might have changed in vBulletin with their 4.0.x release,
I so far cannot find one good single "What's Changed" list.

So ... let's make one here, specific to iTulip.com.

What's Changed (iTulip.com, April 17 2010 forum software upgrade)

  • The most visible change is a change to lighter colors and other various layout and style changes. These are the visible result of a more powerful style sheet (CSS) template based page presentation. A vBulletin.com page described this as "A fresh design and layout making use of semantic markup and CSS styling."
  • Forum (and new Blog) URL's are less geeky. They are so-called "SEO" (for Search Engine Optimized) URL's.
  • AltaVista BabelFish page translation links are available at the bottom of each page.
  • At the bottom of the main Forums page (http://www.itulip.com/forums/forum.php) in the "What's Going On?" section under "Currently Active Users", the count of users online links to a Who's Online page sortable by name (User Name), time (of Last Activity) or most recently viewed thread (Location). Ah - this Who's Online page is more conveniently available as one of the options on the "Quick Links" subtab near the top of each forum page.
  • The ever popular flashing red arrow "What's New" button on Forums is now available on either the "What's New?" tab or just below it (on either the Forum or "What's New?" tabs, the first subtab, "New Posts".
  • Similar Threads are displayed on all thread views
  • Custom META keywords/description tags and META Tag Cloud display
  • Video Embedding (YouTube, Vimeo, Hulu, Dailymotion, Google, Metacafe)
  • Simple Cross Publishing -- What's starts out as a Blog post can be promoted to a forum article (and various other cross activities, I presume)
  • Cross-content search system providing a single interface to search across forum posts, blog entries and comments and other supported products
  • vBulletin.com claims improved search performance (I have not verified this.)
  • Near top of each thread page are options "View First Unread" and (on the Thread Tools menu) options to "Show Printable Version", "Email this Page...",and "Subscribe to this Thread..."
  • A centralized attachment system, allowing the sharing of attachments across products (I haven't tried this yet, so don't know if it works, or if or how it is different than before.)
What have I missed, or misrepresented?

Fred, in Post #4 of Upgrade Is A Value, had this to say on the upgrade:
The look is not the reason for the upgrade but the improvements to functionality that at first may not be obvious. For example, you may have noticed that as a Select member there are no more ads. Log out and look at the forums and you will see the ads are still there. The major benefits come later with the integration of the content management system and the forums is up and running in a few weeks.

For one thing, I'll be able to promote a brilliant Finster posting into an article that appears on the front page without an hour of hacking and pasting.

If you are so inclined, you can operate your very own Finster Blog inside of iTulip rather than the klunky Finster Forum we had before.

Want to embed a video? No more junky clunky media tags. Click on the insert video icon, enter the URL, and the system figures the rest out.

There are dozens of administrative improvements that you won't see but they'll free me up to so other tasks.

TPC, I knew you would be all over the blog feature. Question for you, have you tried to do any searches yet. It seems not to work too well. Try searching for something you know you wrote.

I just tried various searches now; they all worked as I expected, whether searching just in the blog or across both blog and forum.

It looks like the previous limit on words of three characters or less still applies. No such short words are indexed by the search engine, from what my very very limited testing.

I've found I can search and find word I've used, but not if I search for them using my username. Also no option for posts only.

I see at least three Search interfaces:

    1. On forum pages, there is a white box and magnifying glass for quick searches.
    2. Just below that one can click on "Advanced Search" and get two tabs:
      1. Search Single Content Type
      2. Search Multiple Content Types
The Search Single Content Type lets me search forum posts only, or blog posts only, and let me search for all posts by myself. Also on my iTulip homepage, I could find all my posts by clicking on "Find all posts."

Do you know a way to search for posts only. Say I want to find a post and I remember Total Money Supply was the topic, but probably not in the title. If I search I will find many many threads with many many posts.

No the search doesn't work. I searched again for something I posted and it could not find it.

What exactly did you search for, which search interface did you use, what choices or options did you select or deselect, and what did you get for search results instead of what you wanted?

I'll need some specific details to be of any use. I know the search works, as I use it frequently.

Searching for "total money supply" won't work very well, I'm afraid. I don't see any way to search for phrases. A search for "total money supply" will get any posts (or any threads, depending on how you search) which have all three of the words "total", "money" or "supply" somewhere in the post or thread. Well, it won't get all such posts, rather just the first 98 or 99 of them, depending on sort order.

In other words, from what I can tell, the Search works "as designed", however you might have to be a drain bramaged nerd to guess the design.

I know I had a post where I bet Ax that the Cleveland Browns would win over 5.5 games. Searched on Cleveland on Browns on Ax on over/under on sandbagging. Nada.

It's awful I never had this kind of trouble with the old advanced search. And you can't just see posts, you have to go through the whole thread.

I take it you mean this post: JPMorgan Sees V-Shaped Recovery on Robust Growth.
    • Click on "Advanced Search".
    • Click on the "Search Single Content Type" tab near the top.
    • Choose "Show Results As: *Posts" to just see the posts.
I found your post linked above searching on "Browns", articles by "cjppjc". I could have searched for "sandbagging" as well. That post doesn't have "Cleveland" in it, so that would not have worked to find this post.

You can search for posts by "ax", but you cannot search for posts containing the word "ax" in their content, because the search only works on four letter or longer words (I can usefully search for "bull", but not for "cow" -- too short a word.) Apparently only the first 99 or so results are returned, so if your search has more results than that, you won't see them all.
