The BIS (Bank for International Settlements) just released an update today, and total derivatives are down for period ending 12/1/2008.

Note: these charts haven't been cleaned up yet in the sense of only using primary colors and avoiding more than 3-4 lines per charts, etc... my round tuits are still on back order...

So, looking at the nominal value chart vs the market value chart, am I correct to interpret that the current market value of all this stuff is ~13% of the original face value?

You caught me mid stream on doing some chart updates, which are now complete.

As of 12/2008, total nominal value is about $592 trillion and market value is about $34 trillion for a ratio of about 5.7% or leverage of about 17.5:1.... which is down from a leverage of 33.6:1 as of 6/2008.

The current 17.5:1 leverage is by far the lowest in the entire series which started in 1998. It peaked at 46.4:1 in period ending 6/2007.
