I read somewhere that the EUR became the currency of choice in Europe at least for shall we call it outside-the-banking-system transactions and hoarding just because of the convenient 500 EUR bill.

On the other end, one currency perhaps least suited for this purpose might be the Uzbek sum, where the largest bill was worth about $1 US last I checked.
