Is Australia keen on seeing BHP buy Rio, since it could gain more in tax revenue from the monopoly? How does this impact the Aussie gov?

What!! You think anyone in Australia has any idea what they are doing??? The regulators have had a look at it and, in an intital report, can see no great reason why it should not happen. The Chinese are the ones who are worried about it and are trying to establish a blocking holding in RIO.

As to rax revenues i can't see it makes much difference.
IF there is any net change to Australian ownership we will favour whatever deal involves selling as much of Aus equity off, to cover our enormous CAD, in order that we can continue to fund our extravagant and unrealistic lifestyle to which we have become accustomed.

I am not too sure exactly what it all has to do with Australia except that a fair proportion of the mines are here If I rememebr correctly Australian ownership of BHP Billiton is down to 16%. I imagine RIO is something similar but i have no facts on that.

Actually, unconfirmed report says BHP Billiton is still 40% Australian owned. RIO is just 15% Australian owned.
