Why is it the free trade lobby wraps itself in righteous indignation when someone proposes to tax something you buy something from someone half way around the world, but when you buy the same thing from the guy across the street, it couldn’t care less?

Now seriously, was there once a place where existed free trade? This two words maybe need an entry in your glossary.

Probably, in very small or "primitive" cultures, but mostly it was a tongue in cheek comment to Finster's very good article in the area.
Would that I was good enough or daring enough to try and cleanly define free trade in a practical sense, and without getting into politics. Any suggestions?
