Does anyone have historical data on gold vs. a general commodities basket like the CRB index? I would love to see a long term chart of that. Bart, maybe? Thanks!

Search posts by Finster, I think he has put up such a chart.

Thanks, Jim! Here's one of Finster's charts from last November (thanks Finster!).

Today's ratio (Feb 21 2008) is 2.31. Interesting to me that gold is down 11% vs commodities since Jan 2000, even as its nominal price has risen 237% over the same period. More evidence that gold is not in a bubble, but simply reflects the depreciation of the dollar and other currencies.
Here's another 35 year chart from gold-eagle.com that shows gold vs CRB, so the numbers are different than Finster's Gold/DJC chart, but the movements are correlated.

Would still love to know what the ratio was over an even longer period (100+ years), as the US dropping the gold standard in the '70s makes that data unique and difficult to draw conclusions about a long-term baseline.

Jimmy, Bart has done a number of related charts. Not sure any of them are exactly what you're after, but I think some of them are probably close.
Do a search with Bart as the author and your search terms to see what pops up.
You might also use 'cycle of hard assets' as a term.

Or look on Bart's site, probably better organized there.
