I believe I heard this project was canned and the plane mothballed.

Not confirmed though.

Launching a rocket is quite hard. All nations have had failures. I think the least unlikely reason is that they didn't get it right.

I heard it was a three stage lift vehicle. At what stage did it blow, 1, 2, or 3? After 3 separates and ignites, do you know you have a success and can self destruct the rocket? You lose the prestige, but you know in you can do it, and take a little pressure off?
