you know, i'm watching this video and i'm just smiling thinking that there is civilized debate over regulation and markets, and again, it's not a perfect system, but isn't it great we can watch a discussion like that?

IMHO, the time for 'civilized debate' is long over.

We've 'civilizedly debated' ourselves into a place where torture is debatable, to a place where whether the President is bound by the Constitution is debatable, to a place where many other nations in the world have much greater class mobility than the U.S. does, a place where our natural resources are destroyed for the benefit of the few, a place where blinkered superstition trumps even the most solidly grounded scientific fact.

The relative ignorance of our media on the subjects they cover and the ridiculous insistence of a two-sided debate on every issue (Tonight on Crossfire! Daylight: Invisible Gnomes with Torches, or the Sun -- which is responsible?) has led us to a place where 'debate' is nearly meaningless and beyond useless.

As currently construed it's nothing more than sophistry, and it's destructive.
